According to an article published in the popular national English daily Dhaka Tribune, Bangladeshi movies are considered as “neglected orphans”. These words might seem too harsh, but they are true and contextual. Bangladeshi viewers or the target audience are not taken into considerations when making movies here. When making children-focused films, this fact becomes conspicuous and even more outrageously evident. Even though it may seem otherwise, children are not easily convinced of substandard content and storylines meant for them. Even the plot lines might be too complex for audiences to follow and sometimes have little to commend them.
Among the most popular genres for children are fantasy, comedy, musical, motivational, realism and animation. All these genres require filmmakers having advanced knowledge and experience to make their audience (children in this case) like certain content. And there is a dearth of talented directors or actors who would think out of the box and understand the mentality of the children. Thus making a movie for kids is already a major challenge. Due to this lack of understanding, the home-grown directors usually make films that go to trash bins due to their flawed direction and acting.
On the other hand, children of today’s world are more interested in watching English or Hindi movies instead of Bangla cinema. For watching foreign movies, they prefer streaming platforms like Netflix or YouTube. The quality of Bangladeshi children’s films is not really up to the mark since most children would prefer Netflix or YouTube over Bangladeshi films. Some locally-made movies are utter dreck and also widely regarded as “cringeworthy”. They are full of poor acting and directing by a bunch of morons, including children. As a result, good-quality movies also fail to rise. Due to demotivation in all these sectors and a lack of talented individuals, Bangladeshi filmmakers usually try to avoid making or even trying to make movies dedicated to children.
