Md. Hasanuzzaman
The Fall 2020 CinemaScope Award has been given to Md Hasanuzzaman, a student of ULAB’s Media Studies and Journalism department. The prestigious award is given each semester to the most active member of CinemaScope.
Born in Cumilla’s Chauddagram, Hasan is fond of watching and exploring cinema from around the world. His love towards cinema was not conscious but rather a result of watching films from early childhood in his village where people tended to watch commercial cinemas for entertainment. After watching Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali, Hasan had made up his mind that someday he will make films. He has been in CinemaScope for two years and worked in its Research and Publication department for three semesters. During this time, he organized master classes and webinars on personal cinema, minimalist cinema, André Bazin’s evolution of the language of cinema, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s cinemas, Muhammad Khasru, and Bangladesh film society movement.
His favourite event of CinemaScope is ‘Discourses and Debunking Personal Cinema with Debasish Doob’ where Debasish himself talked about the aspects and opportunities of personal cinema. Hasan is now working on his feature film titled Mohin. The shooting and editing of the film is about to the end and he is hoping to submit the film to the festivals. The works of of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Andrei Tarkovsky, Akira Kurosawa, Abbas Kiarostami, Tareque Masud, and Morshedul Islam to this day serve as his inspiration to make cinema.
